Trying the latest form of bacon abuse

Yesterday I found an unopened jar of Baconnaise. yesterday evening I tried it. Today I report my findings.

Baconnaise is a sandwich spread, but I tried it by itself on bread. It didn't come out of the jar like mayonnaise, which will stand up on your spoon warm, or cold. Instead it had a runny consistency; more liquid-y than a sandwich condiment should be. Taste-wise, it was liquid bacon bits with a hint of mayonnaise tang, and contained enough salt to cure a ham... of blindness. I enjoyed it on the second slice more than the first, because I was prepared for it to run off the bread like rain off sheet-metal. By the third slice of bread, the salt was causing hallucinations. I must have blacked-out after that. I won't be buying it in the future, but baconholics jonesing for a hit will probably love it.

Together at last

baconnaise

Just left on top of a container bin. Unopened. Security seal intact. It's not American, but, I've never seen it before, neither in a supermarket, nor in my wildest dreams. What a weird combination ... "not so weird," a voice tells me. childhood memories of slabs of bread glistening with bacon drippings from a frying pan, come unbidden. I'll have to get some bread and try it later. Shame they added mayonnaise.

Suprise! Baconnaise has a homepage, and, not so surprising, a Wikipedia entry, which explains it's bacon flavoured, but vegetarian, and Kosher, and it's selling like hotcakes (so, why not just a hotcakes-flavoured spread?). I'm still going to try it, but my ardour has waned. Click the image to enlarge.
