Treasure trove of trashed mecha toys

Posted by Unknown
Here are some photos of a few Super Robot toys, all mid-1980s vintage, which some family left in a pile by their recycling. Someone had gone to the trouble to rebox the toys in their original compartmentalized styrofoam inserts, and cardboard boxes, but all the packaging was falling apart, and none of the toys I really looked over had all their original bits. So I settled for grabbing one boxed bot, and taking some photos.

One boxed Super Robot : DAIDEJIN

A 1984 Super Robot by Bandai America (Made in Japan) from their Godaikin series of Super Robots. Item #377033. This is a die-cast metal, transforming toy:
"DAIDENJIN, the robot is transformed into DENJIN, the spaceport, with a few moves here and there."

Unfortunately the box, which is in very bad shape, only included Daidenjin, and his two alternate "Big Punch" hands. So I'm missing the Denjin Sword, Denjin Boomerang, Denjin Ball, and the missiles.

According to the original price tag, the toy was purchased at Mannings, a chain of department stores in Hong Kong, and Macau, for $75.00. This one just sold on Ebay, last month -- complete in original box -- for $266.00 US.

Daidenjin, it turns out, is a mecha character from an ancient Super Sentai television series called Denshi Sentai Denziman (1980-1981), Power Rangers-like TV Show made by Toei, hence Toei's copyright credit on the box, along with TV Asahi, and M.C.G. Daidenjin ("giant electic man") was the first transforming robot in a Super Sentai series.

There were two Gundam sticker books, and one Super Sentai figure. The Mugen Calibur toy is is from a mecha anime called Special Armored Battalion Dorvack (1983-1984). The Gordian toy is from Toshi Gordian (1979-1981). Medetain is from something called  Roller Hero Muteking, or Muteking, the dashing hero (1980-1981). Genesis Climber MOSPEADA (1983-1984) is a pretty famous mecha anime which made up part of the American cut-n-paste series called Robotech (1985), which I was addicted to.

I ran across all these toys yesterday, while I was binning in the Arbutus Ridge area of Vancouver. Binning means collecting the bottles and cans people put out for recycling -- they paid a small deposit on each ready-to-drink beverage container, and I can collect that deposit -- it can be a living. But there's always more to binning than just bottles, and cans. There are people to talk to, and sights to see, and there's all the other interesting things people throw out, like these cool, old school mecha toys.

The Arbutus Ridge is a large, residential area, which has been undergoing demographic change for many years; once exclusively populated with well-off Caucasian families, it now includes a large number of well-off Asian families. While the various ethnic groups all choose the same kinds of luxury vehicles, and homes, their tastes at least differ when it comes to beverages, and toys: Coca-Cola versus coconut water, and Garfield versus Gundam.
