Graffiti is in the eye of the property holder

The job a building in Fairview recently did labeling their brand new Vancouver grey garbage bins brought to mind Lululemon founder Chip Wilson paying taggers to tag, oops, paint a mural on the seawall of his Kitsilano property.

I agree there are times when it makes sense to hire a real graffiti tagger. This building would have been better off hiring one to label their building's bins. A tagger would've known when and how to to use a a spray can, or a metallic marker. The result would be as clean and legible as they wanted it to be, unlike the uncontrolled mess the building made.

Etobicoke is more than it's cracked up to be

As Rob Ford, the titanic Toronto Mayor, steams towards the iceberg called the "crack video," his handlers are spinning things this way and that, to keep his career from sinking.

If the video, now in police hands, turns out to actually show Rob Ford saving dolphins, or counseling his alleged drug dealing co-stars to give up their life of crime, then Rob Ford emerges triumphant. If, on the other hand, the reportedly brightly-lit video shows Ford puffing on a glass pipe, he still probably emerges triumphant. No one can prove, based on a video, what was in the pipe, can they? That's the technical argument Rob Ford's lawyer, and his brother Doug, have been trotting out before the media. They can still hide safely in the letter of the law, even after pissing all over the spirit.

Today the Toronto Star is reporting that Rob Ford may have paid the utility bills at the Etobicoke crack house where he is alleged to have been caught on cell phone video smoking a crack pipe.

If nothing else media coverage of Mayor Rob Ford has made me curious about his home turf of Etobicoke, the west Toronto neighbourhood, central to his rise, and possibly now, to his fall.

What's the story? It can't be that Rob Ford's an idiot

I believe Rob Ford's a punk. Okay, alleged punk; I don't have video. I base this belief on what I understand he's done as Mayor of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and how he's done it -- loudly, abusively, and divisively. That he may-or-may-not have smoked crack is just so much gilding on the lily.

Habs versus the Hab-nots

habsbeatleafsOn Saturday, the Montreal Canadiens (Can-uh-d'yens) beat the Toronto Maple Leafs quite convincingly; reportedly they wanted to send a message. Had Toronto won, they would have clinched a play-off spot; as it is, their fate seems to depend on other teams now. But, the possibility still exists that Montreal and Toronto might actually meet in the NHL Stanley Cup play-offs, for the first time since 1979. Woo-hoo!

As a 30-year resident of Vancouver, I care about the Vancouver Canucks, but, I grew up in Saskatchewan, rooting for Montreal. To me the Habs are hockey, and always will be.
