A friend of mine in Texas raves about Puppy Linux. I hear it does run well on low spec machines. I have to say though that the kawaii thing is a bit too sweet for my sour cynical self...
Puppy's cool; I think it's a very differentiated, niche, Linux. As for the Japanese obsession with cuteness -- years and years of anime builds tolerance -- but trying to watch two episodes of Ichigo Mashimaro in a row requires an insulin injection to forestall blindness.
What I didn't put in the post was that I had the container all the way to the bottle depot. An Asian-Canadian car binner guy arrived, who's a regular at the Go Green depot. He always brings his young daughter, who spends her time energetically playing with bottle caps, and such. I offered her the container. She loved it. When I left she was proudly walking around swinging it, and actually hugging it.
OK. Even a sour bugger like me has to smile at that :)

I particularly enjoy the "Ghost In The Shell" movies, myself. I like "Akira" too. I grok the nihilistic bloodthirst and the sheer weirdness and I can pretend to ignore the pedo stuff.
When an ex tried to get me to watch "Sailor Moon" though - that was a bit much. I think that was her revenge on me for making her listen to all that death metal...
I'm hallucinating clanking bottles now. Or maybe not.

Hmm... Sailor Moon vs. Death Metal -- season 12, episode 10. The lolicon thing's run rampant through even mainstream anime in recent years; impossible to ignore in a popular series like Dance in the Vampire Bund. However, Kawaii is endemic throughout all Japanese culture, consider Kirobo, the talky Japanese robot on the ISS. The Japanese have "issues."
