Shaw's robots -- not smiling with their eyes!

[caption id="attachment_1958" align="alignnone" width="497"]bit-n-bud Bit and Bud are the, wholly-owed, copyrighted, trademarked, property of Shaw Communications, Inc. They are programmed to only attack other telecoms' subscribers.[/caption]

I could go on about how Canada's telecom giants are monopolistic corporations who only pretend to care about their customers. I could, but, better to let one of the telecom giants' own marketing campaigns speak for me.

Shaw Communications' current marketing campaign features two cutesy "delivery robots," Bit and Bud. This soft approach to selling hardware follows in the footsteps of Shaw's competitors -- Bell, had Frank and Gordon, a pair of beavers, whom Canadians seemed to have equally loved and hated. Telus (formerly BC Tel), has been using generic stock photography of cute animals for years.

Shaw's robots however, represent some psychologically devious, and twisted sort of truth in advertising. They are pretend depictions of robots, depicted as having pretend smiles -- their smiles are literally "painted on" the little strips of LED screen they have for mouths.

Shaw may be acknowledging that the whole "machines with a human face" thing is a crock, and people know it. All I know, is, the more I see Bit and Bud, the more creeped out I get.
