Wasn't even aware that fire could read till I saw "fire exit" signs like the one above on some old Fairview apartment buildings. I'm only surmising here, but I think once upon a time, something of the way a cornered beast is know to be more ferocious was seen to be at work in building fires. Things like apartments were thus constructed so flames had a clear avenue of escape. This also explains "fire escapes." Click the image to enlarge it.
