It was a squeaker, but it's official, Vancouver, British Columbia, managed to get through all of July 2013 without a drop of rain, setting a new, all-time record. But, as I said, it was a close thing. At 11 p.m., Wednesday evening, I was seeing flashes in the sky,and it wasn't from our evening fireworks -- that ended at 10:20 p.m. on the dot -- this was distant lightning, and sure enough, some rainfall was recorded at the Vancouver International Airport ( YVR) at 1 a.m. Thursday morning.
Many news reports, such as this GlobalBC TV item, have cited July 1986 as Vancouver's previously driest month on record, even though some rain did fall that month. According to the CBC's item, July 2013 was actually the city's driest month in over 70 years:
Of course, it's raining now, even as I type this -- lightly, I admit, and last night it was coming down in sheets, so back to normal.
